Abstract:
This chapter critically examines the controversy surrounding the reliefs at the Temple of Hathor in Dendera, popularly known as the “Dendera Light”. The analysis is structured around three key areas: the origin of the technological interpretation identifying the images as electrical devices; the religious significance of their iconographic and epigraphic components; and the methodological issues arising from interpreting ancient images through analogies with modern technologies. Methodologically, the study conducts a scoping review of specialized literature using a qualitative-interpretative approach and a topical narrative design. It argues that the electrical hypothesis lacks sufficient archaeological, textual, and technological support, whereas the Egyptological interpretation allows for a coherent integration of the lotus, the Harsomtus serpent, the djed pillar, and the oval structure within the temple's cosmology. The chapter concludes that Dendera serves as a paradigmatic example of the limits of archaeological interpretation.
