  • Abstract:

This study analyzes the relationship between students' digital experience and the academic use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in higher education, considering the implications for sustainable learning. It employed a quantitative approach with a non-experimental, cross-sectional, and correlational design. The convenience sample consisted of 31 university students from two sections of an informatics course (M01, n = 9; M02, n = 22), who completed a 13-item questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale that demonstrated adequate internal consistency (α = .92 for the overall scale). The results showed a strong, significant positive correlation between the two variables in both sections (M01: ρ = .728, p = .026; M02: ρ = .842, p < .001). However, the dimensional analysis revealed differing patterns: while digital experience in section M02 was significantly associated with all three dimensions of academic use, the association in section M01 was concentrated on knowledge and familiarity with AI (ρ = .869, p = .002) and did not reach statistical significance regarding perceived competence (ρ = .229) or academic applications (ρ = .565)—results that should be interpreted with caution due to the group's low statistical power. The study concludes that digital experience, while relevant, does not in itself guarantee the translation of knowledge into competence and academic application, thereby highlighting the importance of pedagogical mediation in fostering meaningful and sustainable learning.
