  • Abstract:

The analysis of affective-motivational factors in higher education has shifted from static and dispositional models toward dynamic and interactive approaches that are highly context-sensitive. This chapter offers an in-depth and pragmatic narrative review of Situational Interest (SI) among college students, clarifying its conceptual definition and distinguishing it from individual interest. With a particular emphasis on the context of higher education in Latin America—characterized by deep socioeconomic gaps and equity challenges—this chapter examines the Four-Phase Model of Interest Development, detailing the cognitive micro-mechanisms that mediate the transition from transient attentional states to stable motivational orientations. Furthermore, the impact of SI on three critical dimensions of the current university environment is discussed: (a) learning in virtual environments (synchronous and asynchronous) and its interaction with perceived self-efficacy; (b) the promotion of self-regulated learning strategies and their role in mitigating dropout rates; and (c) the structuring of cognitively demanding tasks through reciprocal teaching practices and social interactions in the classroom. The findings categorically reveal that retrospective situational interest (assessed after the task) is the primary predictor of effort and subsequent investment of time in independent study. Finally, specific instructional guidelines are proposed for the design of engaging university learning environments; practical implications for higher education teaching are discussed; and future lines of research are suggested in light of new technological challenges and issues of educational equity.
