  • Abstract:

The main objective of this work was to evaluate animal welfare in terms of freedom from pain, injury and/or disease in laying hens subjected to two semi-intensive production systems: floor and grazing. The research was carried out at the Santa Lucía UNIPAZ Research center. A total of 240 Creole hens of the genus Gallus domesticus were randomly selected and distributed into two groups of 120 animals with three replicates of 40 hens each. Group 1 was kept in a grazing system (4 hours/day, density 3 hens/m²) and group 2 in a floor system (density 6 hens/m²) for 60 days plus 15 adaptation days. Welfare indicators evaluated included plumage condition, cannibalism injuries, foot lesions, and mortality, using non-parametric statistics (Chi-square and proportion comparison, SPSS 21.0). Results showed that the grazing system presented better welfare indicators: good plumage condition (69.6%), absence of cannibalism injuries (96.8%), absence of foot lesions (98.3%), and mortality (0%). The floor system showed lower performance: good plumage condition (11.4%), absence of cannibalism injuries (87.9%), absence of foot lesions (83.6%), and mortality (0.1%). It is concluded that the grazing system significantly favors freedom from pain, injury and/or disease in laying hens, representing a viable alternative to improve animal welfare in poultry production.
