  • Abstract:

The construction and infrastructure-maintenance sector represents one of the greatest challenges for global decarbonization because of its dependence on heavy machinery, fossil fuels, and carbon-intensive logistics processes. Organizations currently face a critical dual challenge: the need to maintain aging assets such as bridges, buildings, and industrial facilities, while also meeting increasingly demanding digital and environmental standards. Traditional methods are not only inefficient and costly, but also perpetuate significant occupational risks and an ecological footprint that hinders the transition toward low-impact business models. In response, the study proposes the integration of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as a central component of digital transformation in the preventive and corrective maintenance of infrastructure. The proposed technical solution combines high-precision photogrammetry, aerial thermography, and artificial-intelligence-enabled sensors to create digital twins. The proposal goes beyond the use of a device and involves an organizational paradigm shift: replacing the deployment of temporary physical infrastructure, such as scaffolding and cranes, with more targeted, data-driven interventions powered by renewable energy. Methodologically, the topic is analyzed through the three fundamental pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic. The main objective is to demonstrate that digitalization can be an effective driver of operational sustainability, targeting a reduction of more than 95% in carbon-dioxide emissions compared with conventional methods. The project also seeks to democratize access to advanced maintenance services for lower-resource communities and substantially improve occupational safety. Finally, the study examines legal barriers and the need to reskill human capital, concluding that drone adoption can enable organizations not only to optimize costs but also to strengthen social commitment through more resilient and transparent urban management.
