  • Abstract:

Fragmentation among organizational, territorial, and societal systems limits the ability to explain sustainability as an emergent property. This paper presents Concordant Systems Theory (CST), a conceptual proposal that explains sustainability, adaptation, and continuity through the degree of concordance achieved among these systems. CST does not understand sustainability as a static state or as the accumulation of economic, social, and environmental outcomes, but as a relational property produced when interdependent systems preserve their identities, coordinate their differences, and generate conditions for their joint continuity. The human dimension occupies a distinct position: it is the transversal and vital axis that activates, connects, and transforms the three pillars. People interpret the environment, produce knowledge, make decisions, build relationships, and give meaning to structures. For this reason, human sustainability, articulated at the organizational level through the Human Sustainability Integrated System (SISH), functions within CST as both a generative capacity and a normative criterion. The explanatory core of CST is systemic concordance, defined as an emergent property generated by three conditions: internal coherence, relational cohesion, and contextual compatibility. Internal coherence expresses the correspondence among identity, values, capabilities, decisions, and actions. Relational cohesion refers to the quality of ties that make cooperation, learning, trust, and coordination possible. Contextual compatibility denotes the ability to respond to organizational, territorial, and societal conditions without losing identity or compromising continuity. These conditions are complementary, and weakness in any one of them may limit overall concordance. Misalignments among the pillars generate tension, loss of legitimacy, fragmentation, and reduced adaptive capacity. Concordance, by contrast, promotes knowledge circulation, coordination across scales, and the creation of shared value. CST provides a basis for formulating propositions, constructing measurement scales, and testing systemic configurations. Its emerging nature requires further delimitation, operationalization, and empirical validation.
