O TUDOR QUE FICOU POR NASCER! – MARIA TUDOR E AS SUAS GESTAÇÕES FANTASMA
Maria Tudor foi a única filha do primeiro casamento de Henrique VIII a atingir a idade adulta. Aos 38 anos chegou ao trono, solteira e com um problema urgente de sucessão à coroa Inglesa. Assim, em 1554 casou-se com Filipe de Espanha e para espanto de todos, pouco tempo após o matrimónio, anunciou uma gravidez. Porém, este anúncio acabou por não se confirmar: Mary não estava grávida. Dois anos depois a história repetiu-se e uma nova gravidez “fantasma” voltou a assombrá-la, revelando-se fatal com o seu falecimento aos 42 anos. Vários autores defendem que a mesma sofreu de gravidez psicológica, atualmente designada de pseudociese, uma condição em que há uma conexão estreita entre fatores psicológicos e alterações neuroendócrinas. Nesta reflexão pretende-se explorar aspetos da vida da monarca, como a depressão, solidão e marginalização que sofrera e que podem ter contribuído ao surgimento deste raro e bizarro síndrome.

Abstract:
Maria Tudor was the only daughter of Henry VIII's first marriage to reach the adult stage. She was crown at the age of 38, single and with an urgent problem of succession to the English crown. In order to assure an heir she married Philip of Spain and, to everyone's astonishment, she announced a pregnancy shortly after her marriage. However, this announcement ended up not being confirmed: Mary was not pregnant. Two years later, history repeated itself and a new “phantom” pregnancy came back to haunt her and causing her death at the age of 42. Several authors argue that she suffered from psychological pregnancy, currently called pseudocyesis, a condition in which there is a close connection between psychological factors and neuroendocrine changes. In this reflection, we intend to explore aspects of the monarch's life, such as the depression, loneliness and marginalization she suffered and which might have contributed to the emergence of this rare and bizarre syndrome.
