NEW CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES FOR PROTECTING WORLD HERITAGE AND LANDSCAPES FROM FIRE RISK IN VALPARAÍSO, CHILE

Valparaíso stands out globally for its unique natural landscape and exceptional cultural, historical, and architectural values; for this reason, its central area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. The city is also known for having been affected by major fires, the most negative consequences of which include the irreparable loss of human life, the destruction or severe deterioration of historic buildings, and the disruption of public transport. This article analyzes the natural, urban, and social characteristics of Valparaíso that influence the aggressiveness of fires, the effects of fire on heritage and the landscape, the challenges arising from this situation, and the actions aimed at risk management.
