Abstract:
This chapter critically examines the question of the existence of a “first human” from the perspectives of evolutionary biology, paleoanthropology, and population genetics. The analysis is organized around three main themes: the gradual and population-based nature of evolution; the difficulties in establishing a precise boundary between Homo sapiens and its ancestors; and the significance of genetic concepts such as “Mitochondrial Eve” and “Y-chromosomal Adam”. Methodologically, it relies on a scoping review of specialized literature, developed from a qualitative-interpretive approach and using a narrative topic design. It argues that searching for an individual who was the first human confuses current taxonomic categories with the continuity of evolutionary processes. In conclusion, Homo sapiens has an identifiable evolutionary origin in population terms, but the available evidence does not allow us to transform that process into the biography of a first human individual.
