  • Abstract:

The fragmentation of knowledge about human systems makes it difficult to understand how perspectives centered on people, organizations, and their social environments relate within a common scientific structure. Although different traditions have examined systems thinking, sociotechnical systems, organizational complexity, and human systems, it has not yet been established whether these traditions are converging toward an identifiable field that may be termed Human Systems Thinking. The concept is understood here as a perspective that interprets people and organizations as relational, interdependent, adaptive, and multilevel systems whose behaviors emerge from interactions among their components and with their environment. This formulation finds conceptual support in [1], who extend systems thinking from the individual to the organizational level and argue that organizations can develop observable systemic cognitive capabilities. The objective of this research is to analyze the conceptual evolution of Human Systems Thinking longitudinally and assess whether related traditions show sufficient thematic, intellectual, community, and semantic convergence to support the formation of an emerging scientific field. A longitudinal mixed-methods design is adopted based on records retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus and published through December 31, 2025. The search strategy distinguishes a core corpus comprising studies on applied systems thinking, human and sociotechnical systems, and organizations as complex adaptive systems. The analysis integrates three programs through the Longitudinal Cognitive-Semantic Convergence Framework, a term proposed to designate a replicable procedure combining the evolution of scientific structures with the temporal transformation of their meanings. SciMAT is used to reconstruct the thematic evolution of the field according to the science-mapping approach proposed in [2]. VOSviewer is used to examine co-citation and bibliographic-coupling networks following [3], while NVivo incorporates the qualitative component through comparative coding as described in [4]. Preliminary results indicate that identification of an emerging field cannot be based exclusively on the frequency or co-occurrence of terms. It requires simultaneous examination of thematic continuity, convergence of intellectual bases, interaction among communities, and the progressive stabilization of meanings. The main contribution is the Longitudinal Cognitive-Semantic Convergence Framework, which distinguishes between the circumstantial coexistence of literatures, the formation of an interdisciplinary zone, and the emergence of a scientific field. Its application provides a methodological basis for determining whether Human Systems Thinking constitutes a scientifically grounded integrative label or remains an incipient conceptual construction.
