ESTIMACIÓN DE LA ABUNDANCIA DE Oebalus spp. (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) EN CULTIVOS COMERCIALES DE ARROZ DEL LITORAL ECUATORIANO

Abstract:
Oebalus spp. is one of the major pests of rice during the crop’s reproductive stages, causing losses in yield and in the industrial quality of the grain. Temperature and relative humidity are key variables in the population dynamics of phytophagous insects; however, information remains limited regarding the predictive power of climatic variables with respect to the abundance of Oebalus spp. under tropical conditions. The study was conducted between 2024 and 2025 at three rice-growing locations on the Ecuadorian coast: Daule, Salitre, and Santa Lucía. Weekly monitoring was carried out using 10 double-net sweeps on commercial plots planted with the SFL-11 variety, and the average temperature, maximum temperature, and relative humidity were recorded. The population abundance of Oebalus spp. was analyzed using generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). Daule had the highest population abundances of Oebalus spp., associated with average temperatures of 27.1 °C and maximum temperatures of 31.7 °C. Average temperature showed the strongest positive association with insect abundance, while high maximum temperatures had a partially limiting effect on captures. Population fluctuations showed progressive increases starting in week 7, reaching their highest peaks between weeks 9 and 12 of the growing season. The recorded population levels exceeded the economic intervention thresholds established for this pest. Average temperature was the main climatic variable associated with the abundance of Oebalus spp., while high maximum temperatures partially limited population size. GLMM models made it possible to describe catches per sampling unit, proving highly useful for the development of monitoring and integrated management programs in rice-growing systems the Ecuadorian coast.
