Abstract:
This chapter critically examines the English sweating sickness, an epidemic disease that primarily affected England between 1485 and 1551 and whose etiology remains uncertain. The analysis is organized around three axes: the reconstruction of the disease's main clinical and epidemiological characteristics; the contrast between 16th-century medical explanations and modern etiological hypotheses, with particular attention to hantavirus; and the epistemological limits of retrospective diagnosis. Methodologically, the study is grounded in a scoping review of specialized literature, conducted using a qualitative-interpretative approach and a narrative-topical design. It argues that clinical and epidemiological similarities allow for the assessment of the plausibility of various hypotheses but cannot demonstrate a specific etiology in the absence of direct microbiological evidence. In conclusion, the English sweating sickness highlights the limitations of retrospective diagnosis and the need to rigorously distinguish between clinical compatibility, historical probability, and causal demonstration.
