  • Abstract:

This chapter critically examines the relationship between agriculture, water management, and landscape transformation in the Inca Empire, with particular attention to arid environments and the site of Moray. The analysis is organized around three main themes: the construction of terraces and the transformation of topographic constraints into productive spaces; water management and the development of agricultural systems in arid environments; and the interpretation of Moray as a possible Inca “agricultural laboratory.” Methodologically, the study is based on a scoping review of specialized literature, conducted from a qualitative, historical, and interpretive perspective and using a topical narrative design. It argues that Inca agriculture did not constitute a simple adaptation to natural conditions but rather relied on knowledge, technologies, and infrastructure capable of transforming particular landscapes, although many of these practices had pre-Inca precedents. In conclusion, Moray demonstrates the sophistication of Andean agriculture, but its interpretation as an “agricultural laboratory” should be regarded as a plausible hypothesis rather than an archaeologically demonstrated function.
