CENÁRIO ATUAL E DESAFIOS DOS RECURSOS HÍDRICOS NO DISTRITO FEDERAL, BRASIL CENTRAL

Esse capítulo apresenta um breve histórico e um panorama atual dos recursos hídricos do Distrito Federal, Brasil, com usos potenciais e seus desafios. O Distrito Federal (DF) está coberto pelo Domínio Cerrado no Planalto Central, e esta região é considerada o “berço das águas” ou a “caixa d’água” do Brasil. Nascentes, zonas úmidas e uma rede intricada de cursos d’água de pequeno porte, como riachos e córregos, fluem em profusão. Os recursos hídricos no DF são destinados para dois principais usos: abastecimento humano e irrigação de hortaliças, frutas e grãos. Quase 100% da população tem acesso a água potável e 93% das residências são atendidas por coleta de esgoto. As áreas urbanas e as terras irrigadas representam os pontos de risco para a degradação e recarga das águas do Distrito Federal. A região apresenta aquíferos pequenos e os cursos d’água são de cabeceiras e de pequeno porte. Possui, assim, uma disponibilidade hídrica baixa. Com isso, torna-se indispensável equacionar os diversos usos humanos da água em região vulnerável à escassez hídrica como o Distrito Federal.

  • Abstract:

    This chapter presents a brief history and a current overview of the water resources of the Brazilian Federal District, including their potential uses and challenges. The Federal District (DF) is covered by Cerrado Domain, in the Brazilian Central Plateau, and this region is considered the "cradle of waters" or the "water tower" of Brazil. Springs, wetlands, and an intricate network of small waterways, such as streams and creeks, flow in abundance. Water resources in the Federal District are allocated for two main uses: human supply and irrigation of vegetables, fruits, and grains. Nearly 100% of the population has access to potable water, and 93% of homes are served by a sewage collection system. Urban areas and irrigated lands represent the risk points for water degradation and its recharge in the Federal District. Therefore, it becomes essential to consider the various human uses of water in a region vulnerable to water scarcity, such as the Federal District.
